what is nutrition therapy?

As a registered dietitian (RD), our job is to provide medical nutrition therapy (MNT). Medical Nutrition therapy is an evidence-based and therapeutic approach for addressing the underlying causes that may be contributing to a challenging relationship with food or body. While providing nutrition education and exploring the science-y side of food is a critical part of the healing process, it is not the only part; dissecting negative body image beliefs, exploring your body's signals, and challenging food rules are equally as important.

Given the complex nature of eating disorders, often times a multidisciplinary approach is needed. This means, it is common (and often necessary) for clients to be working with a therapist, psychiatrist, medical doctor, and registered dietitian to provide the best possible care.

individual counseling

assessments

Initial assessments allow us to get to know each other and usually take about 90 minutes. The main purpose of this appointment is for me to gather detailed information about your overall health and explore your relationship with food. This comprehensive assessment may dive deep: topics such as medical history, sleep patterns, gut health, mental health, relationship with movement, diet culture, and body image are discussed at your comfort level. Together, we will create an individualized plan to establish adequate nourishment routines that align with your long-term goals.

follow-ups

Follow-up sessions are typically 30-60 minutes and occur weekly, however, the time may vary depending upon your needs and circumstances. Follow-ups are a space for me to provide you with up-to-date education, unconditional support, and ongoing accountability to support your journey. We are constantly changing and evolving, and our sessions together will reflect the fluid process of recovery. During this time, we will explore tools outside of the realm of nutrition essential to maintaining balanced eating habits.
